Title: Issue #63: New AWS Heroes and a Guest Editor Publication: Ready, Set, Cloud! Series: Ready, Set, Cloud Picks of the Week Author: Allen Helton Published: June 12, 2023 URL: https://www.readysetcloud.io/newsletter/63/ Matt Martz has taken over the newsletter while Allen is taking some well deserved R&R! *This weeks newsletter is authored by Matt Martz ([martzcodes](https://linkedin.com/in/martzcodes)) while Allen is out on vacation.* ### Serverless Superhero Our serverless superhero this week is [Alex Wood](https://alexwood.codes/about.html)! Alex is a Senior Software Engineer (AWS Serverless Developer Experience) at AWS and has been there for over 12 years. He is an OG. He spearheaded the ruby SDK and was recently a guest on the [AWS Developers Podcast](https://aws.amazon.com/developer/podcast/?developer-podcast.sort-by=item.additionalFields.EpisodeNum&developer-podcast.sort-order=desc). ### Tutorials In this post, Pubudu Jayawardana (an AWS Community Builder) explores how [lambda concurrency is determined when a SQS FIFO queue is configured as the source](https://dev.to/aws-builders/aws-lambda-concurrency-when-sqs-fifo-queue-as-trigger-1nn6). He gives a nice description with examples on key aspects of this flow, and even includes CDK code to go along with it. ### Interesting Reads AWS Serverless Hero Yan Cui writes another great post on [Choreography vs Orchestration in the land of serverless](https://theburningmonk.com/2020/08/choreography-vs-orchestration-in-the-land-of-serverless/). He discusses when you should use one over the other (or even when to use both). ### Podcasts In episode 86 of the [AWS Developers Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/7rQjgnBvuyr18K03tnEHBI) Dave and Emily interview our serverless superhero of the week, Alex Wood. Alex is a Senior Software Engineer at AWS in the Serverless Developer Experience space. They talk about IAM and Resource Policies and give a quick walkthrough on AWS Serverless Connectors. **SHAMELESS SELF PLUG ALERT:** I (Matt Martz) have been recording a weekly 10 minute-long podcast related to serverless. It is a satire inspired by "The Colbert Report" of the early 2000s. The episodes are written as a collaboration with ChatGPT. [Serverless Cult Podcast - Episode 3: Embracing the Divine Power of Serverless](https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/serverless-cult/episodes/Episode-3-Embracing-the-Divine-Power-of-Serverless-e2576t4). Serverless be with you. 🙏 ### New Releases Congratulations to the [10 new AWS Heroes that were announced this week](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/announcing-the-latest-aws-heroes-june-2023/). They are all excellent choices and I can't wait to see their continued contributions to the community! (They were all AWS Community Builders :)) AWS announced a [new set of APIs for SQS Dead-Letter Queue Redrive](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/a-new-set-of-apis-for-amazon-sqs-dead-letter-queue-redrive/). Queue redrive can help simplify your code by enabling the original queue to attempt to re-process messages. [Amazon Redshift Serverless now supports query scheduling and Single sign-on support](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2023/06/amazon-redshift-query-scheduling-single-sign-on/) ### Spotlight In this week's spotlight, Lars Jacobsson was inspired by an SST feature for debugging lambdas and he converted it for use with AWS SAM (which I know Allen is a big fan of 😅). Check out Lars' [lambda-debug project](https://github.com/ljacobsson/lambda-debug#lambda-debug) which doesn't require code changes and only needs some minor config. He plans to add support for CDK in the future. ### Tip of the Week AWS Community Builders applications will be [re-opening in July](https://aws.amazon.com/developer/community/community-builders/). Join the waitlist and start brushing up on your application! ### Last Words If you'd like to make a recommendation for the serverless superhero or for an article you found especially useful, send Allen a message on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/allenheltondev), [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/allenheltondev/), or [email](mailto:allenheltondev@gmail.com).
