Serverless Picks of the Week
Issue #19: It’s About the Journey

Serverless Superhero

This week our serverless superhero is Matt Coulter, senior architect at Liberty IT and AWS DevTools Hero. Matt has done a little bit of everything in the serverless space, from blog posts, to writing a book about CDK, to speaking at the AWS re:Invent keynote, to building the CDK patterns website, to starting the Belfast AWS meetup group. He is a shining light in the community and has enabled so many people to build. Thank you Matt, for helping shape the serverless community.

Spotlight

Every week I highlight a particularly meaningful article. This week, one of our previous superheroes, Ran Isenberg published an inspiring article about his journey in the serverless space. His success started from a small contribution to the open source library AWS Lambda Powertools for Python. This is a truly motivating read and I highly recommend it for people looking to get started.

Tutorials

A storage-first approach to serverless design is starting to become generally accepted as a best practice. Make sure your data is persisted before doing anything with it. Lee James Gilmore shares with us a post on how to build a serverless solution by going storage-first with a real world example (and a code repo!). He does a phenominal job illustrating why it is important in addition to how to implement it.

New Releases

For those of us who use Lambda at scale, a significant release came out last week announcing tiered pricing for compute duration. If your monthly Lambda GB-seconds is between 6 - 15 billion, you get 10% off! If it’s over 15 billion, you get 20% off! It’s a great incentive to use Lambda if you were hesitant about it at scale.

Good Reads

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Khawaja Shams, co-founder and CEO of Momento, where he shared his story about building a truly serverless caching solution. It’s an impressive story, and he’s built a team of highly skilled engineers around him who live and breathe serverless. One of his team members, Meera Jindal, wrote an article telling us to stop settling for almost serverless. Her article goes into detail about what makes something truly serverless vs something that just smells like it.

This newsletter often covers the things you can do with serverless today. We don’t often discuss the outlook of serverless in the future. I (Allen Helton) wrote a blog on my thoughts of what the future holds for serverless. The possibilities are wide open and if things keep trending the way they are, we’re in for a real treat.

Upcoming Events

The Moar Serverless!! 2022 conference is a free full-day event happening this Thursday, August 11. It features 9 speakers and covers the tools and techniques necessary to be successful with serverless today. Don’t miss it!

Last Words

Thank you all for pouring your time and effort into sharing with others. It is you who makes this community grow and help widen the acceptance of serverless in production software. I love hearing your journeys of how you got where you are today, so please share yours with me!

If you’d like to make a recommendation for the serverless superhero or for an article you found especially useful, send me a message on Twitter, LinkedIn, or email.

Happy Coding!

Allen
